Susette Hsiung

Hsiung oversees the production companies that create the live-action series, animated series and movies that are the cornerstones of Disney’s kids and family domain. She’s passionate about diversity, and emphasizes the importance of employee resource groups in a company as sprawling as Disney. “People can easily feel lost and overlooked. ERGs are a touchstone for employees to feel connected to others and develop a sense of belonging,” she says. Hsiung also developed the 360 Girl Task Force, and works to encourage collaboration among female employees.

What does your company/organization do to ensure all employees feel included?
We support employee resource groups. In an organization as big as The Walt Disney Company, people can easily feel lost and overlooked. ERGs are a touchstone for employees to feel connected to others and develop a sense of belonging. For example, The Women’s Connection was founded to service the various roles women play and help to navigate them.

How can diversity be better incorporated into the recruiting process?
I would like to see more differently-abled people in our workforce. In order to accomplish this, we need alternative ways to identify, recruit, train and support our workforce.

Can you share a successful diversity program at your company or one you’ve observed at another company or organization?
In addition to the long recognized Writer/Director TV Diversity program at Disney/ABC, we are rolling out diversity efforts across roles and levels. We are building out the diversity program to include more disciplines and opportunities for under-represented groups in live action and animation. The success measure will be to sunset these programs when diversity is no longer unique.
