Marva Johnson

Johnson’s close to wrapping up her first year of a two-year term as chair of WICT’s board of directors. It’s an organization close to her heart, having served as a member of the WICT Global Board for nearly a decade. Under Johnson’s guidance, WICT will celebrate its 40th anniversary. In her day job, she keeps close tabs on community and government initiatives across nine southeastern states. Among the women who inspire her is former boss at Bright House Networks, Nomi Bergman. “She is fearless in her pursuit of challenging opportunities… She gets things done,” she says. “Most importantly, she is a dedicated wife and a wonderful mother.”

What’s a recent example of a step forward for women in the media industry?
One of my most favorite steps forward for women in the media industry is the increased diversity in the visual images we see of women on screen and in print advertising. From the visually stunning beauty of Halima Aden, an American fashion model who was the first to wear a hijab in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, to the majestic storytelling of Shonda Lynn Rhimes, women have forever changed the media landscape to truly reflect the richness of the diversity of all variations of our human existence.

Who is an inspirational woman you admire, and why?
I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Nomi Bergman. She is fearless in her pursuit of challenging opportunities. She has a brilliant mind. She is dauntless in her efforts to reimagine and re-engineer outcomes. She gets things done. Most importantly, she is a dedicated wife and a wonderful mother. She is my inspiration.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three years ago?
The most dramatic change in my sector of the business today compared to three years ago is reflected in the transformation of the cable industry’s service offerings from a discrete set of fixed home based services to a mobile, integrated platform of product offerings. The technology convergence that was promised is here and all sectors of the business have to move with technology momentum to ensure our long term success.
