Marva Johnson

The Why: Johnson is passionate about bridging the digital divide in the state of Florida and beyond. She’s a board member for the Florida Virtual School and was formerly chair of the Florida State board of education, where at both she helped organize events for communities in need. Currently, Johnson sits on the board of trustees for the Pace Center for Girls, which teaches policies, programs and practices to provide women opportunities through education, counseling, training and advocacy.

She Says… “Most people believe when you’re talking about DEI, you’re talking about doing a favor for someone or for a group of people. This view fails to appreciate the fact that DEI initiatives have a clear return on investment for businesses and improve enterprise outcomes. It’s far from charity.”

What recent pop culture moment showed progress in diversity and inclusion in entertainment? Beyoncé is consistently breaking the internet. The fact that she and her partner Jay-Z are two of the most successful and wealthy entertainers in America shows progress.

Who do you view as a DEI champion and why? Rather than selecting a specific person, I see so many leaders in the cable industry as longtime champions for diversity and inclusion—being committed to and putting resources behind DEI.
