Jamila Daniel

Daniel built the framework for sustainable change within Lionsgate by collaborating with department leaders and stakeholders to establish foundational elements that make DEI intrinsic to the business. “I am honored to be a part of this important work, and know that we must continue to disrupt the status quo, remove barriers and create new systems that provide everyone with the opportunity to thrive,” she says. She also redesigned the company’s internship programs into a pipeline for diverse hires, provided company-wide resources for building inclusive teams, and helped develop a transparent culture where everyone can feel seen and heard. Following the murder of George Floyd, Daniel helped implement a series of “Conversations That Matter,” including illuminating discussions about difficult issues.

How have you been a champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion?
As Chief Diversity Officer, I have worked to build the framework for structural and sustainable change within Lionsgate. Working with leadership, our ERGs, Human Resources, Learning & Development and various other stakeholders, we have laid the foundational elements necessary for DEI to be intrinsic to all facets of the business. This has included creating space for understanding and conversation through training and expert led panels, implementing an Inclusive Hiring Process across the company, launching a Supplier Diversity Program, expanding and deepening our partnerships with diverse organizations, and providing development opportunities for underrepresented talent. I am honored to be a part of this important work, and know that we must continue to disrupt the status quo, remove barriers and create new systems that provide everyone the opportunity to thrive.

Which celebrity do you think is setting a strong example for the next generation?
I would say Beyoncé is setting a strong example for the next generation. Through her art, celebrity and global platform she continually brings awareness to social justice issues. Beyoncé is a true activist and is fearless in her commitment to equality. I also love how she not only celebrates Black culture, but also creates opportunity for Black creatives and Black businesses. A feminist, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Beyoncé is the blueprint for the next generation.

Favorite current show that you feel embraces D&I?
“Blindspotting” on STARZ. It is such a unique show, giving authentic voice to characters and stories that are often overlooked. The show centers on family, but explores complex topics such as racism, mental health, mass incarceration and poverty. Something I found truly groundbreaking was how spoken word and dance were used to bring the audience closer to the characters and storyline. I think a sign of a great show is one that evokes all of our emotions, and “Blindspotting” does that.
