Jamila Daniel

Since being elevated to her current role in June, Daniel was successful in designating Juneteenth as an annual company-wide holiday for Starz and Lionsgate. She also focused on fostering dialogue amongst the company’s employees, implementing a series of “Conversations That Matter.” The conversations address racial justice, equality and systemic issues that have brought us to where we are today. “The industry needs to ask not only who is in the room, but also who is trying to get in the room but can’t?” Daniel says. “What systemic conditions have been created that perpetuate a lack of diversity, equity and inclusion within the industry?”

The conversation about racial injustice in 2020 has been… exhausting, necessary and long overdue. However, I am cautiously optimistic that conversation will transcend into action, and we will move towards becoming a nation where equality for all is realized.

What are some of the tough conversations this industry needs to have?
The industry needs to ask not only who is in the room, but also who is trying to get in the room but can’t? What systemic conditions have been created that perpetuate a lack of diversity, equity and inclusion within the industry?

How have you been a champion of diversity & inclusion in your professional life?
In my 22 years in HR I have always championed diversity, equity, and inclusion. I have re-designed the mission and execution of internship programs to be pipelines for diverse hires, provided enterprise wide resources for inclusive teams and leadership and worked to create transparent cultures where voices are heard and valued.
