Jamila Daniel

The Why: Daniel’s track record in diversifying hiring at Starz and Lionsgate is more than evident: since January 2022 hires were 55.8% female and 29% people of color. About 47% of executives at the SVP level and above identified as women. Last year 62% of summer interns were from diverse backgrounds, and for the past four consecutive years Lionsgate was named one of the best places to work for Gender Equity by Bloomberg Index.

She Says… “To make the hiring process more inclusive it is important to center on access, equity and transparency. Companies should institute a formal process that provides access to opportunity for both internal and external candidates.”

How do you define inclusion? Inclusion is when we actively create an environment where every individual is treated fairly and respectfully; feels a sense of belonging as their authentic self; and has the opportunity to contribute, grow and thrive. An inclusive environment welcomes and celebrates diversity in all its forms.

What practices should be adopted to make the hiring process more inclusive? To make the hiring process more inclusive it is important to center on access, equity and transparency. Companies should institute a formal process that provides access to opportunity for both internal and external candidates. The evaluation of candidates must be objective and non-biased. Employing interview panels with consistent questions ensures candidates are being evaluated fairly and assessed on the same criteria. There also needs to be intentionality around sourcing candidates and building talent pipelines. In order to build a slate of candidates with a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives it is imperative to cast a wide net. This is supported by building relationships within various communities and leveraging partner organizations and employee networks. It is also important to educate and train hiring managers and all stakeholders on the overall hiring process, their role in the process, and how to avoid bias during interviews. Companies should also collect demographic data from applicants, candidates and subsequent hires. Through data, we are able to track progress, analyze efforts and implement strategies and solutions.
