Julie Laulis

Cable One has been on an acquisition spree, moving forward on 10 acquisitions in half as many years. While bringing those families together under one roof is no small feat, Laulis has found a way to do it and keep morale high. Through the pandemic, she began recording and distributing videos twice a month speaking directly to Cable One’s associates. They quickly became an employee favorite. If you were to attend Laulis’ book club, you’d find her reading “Courage To Advance: Real Life Resilience from the World’s Most Successful Women in Business,” a collection of stories from top professional women. “It is written for every current and aspiring leader, revealing the things that leaders rarely talk about, including the behind the scenes struggles,” she says.

What’s one way your company has broadened the recruiting process to ensure greater diversity?
Cable One takes a number of actions to broaden the recruiting process to ensure greater diversity, just a few include:

  • Partnering with diversity organizations to share job postings
  • Working to ensure diversity on hiring panels
  • Participating in diversity job fairs
  • Highlighting the company’s diverse culture on our social media and recruiting platforms.
  • Ensuring inclusive, gender-neutral wording in our job postings by running them through a gender decoder.
  • Training managers on interviewing skills and how to properly assess candidates to avoid unconscious bias.
  • Re-evaluating job requirements that may needlessly eliminate diverse candidates based on education or physical requirements.

What one female empowerment book do you think every woman should read?
I’d like to plug a book written by the leaders of a non-profit group I belong to called Women Execs on Boards (weob.org), whose mission is to assist in the placement of women on boards and C Suite positions. The book is called “Courage To Advance: Real Life Resilience from the World’s Most Successful Women in Business.” It is a powerful collection of 36 stories about how the world’s most successful women have overcome some of life’s biggest challenges to reach the top of their professions. It is written for every current and aspiring leader, revealing the things that leaders rarely talk about, including the behind the scenes struggles. It is real and inspiring—worth the read and a book club pick as well!
