Juan Otero

The Why: Otero spent a lot of time in 2022 re-tooling Comcast’s external corporate advisory council to better represent the interests of Black, AAPI, Latino, Indigenous Peoples and Native Americans, people with disabilities and LGBTQ+ communities. He works with employees and other executives to ensure disability inclusion remains a top priority as part of the ERG MyAbilities. Additionally, Otero manages the company’s DEI speaker series, where he invites speakers with dynamic backgrounds in media, education, policy and more to showcase actionable steps toward a more inclusive future.

He Says… “We are still failing to fully integrate neurodiverse employees into our workplace. This requires us to rethink the confines of ‘normal’ and recognize how we can and must make accessibility and disability inclusion a priority in our day-to-day lives, especially in the workplace.”

Place I would love to retire to: Somewhere that I can hail a cab and not be crushed by the heat.

What is an overlooked aspect of DEI? As a society, we can all do better by the PWD community given its global intersectionality and simultaneous invisibility. Case in point, we are still failing to fully integrate neurodiverse employees into our workplace. This requires us to rethink the confines of “normal” and recognize how we can and must make accessibility and disability inclusion a priority in our day-to-day lives, especially in the workplace.

What recent pop culture moment showed progress in diversity and inclusion in entertainment? NBCUniversal’s recent film “Champions” showed what magic can happen when we have actors from the disability community playing characters with disabilities. It was a great piece of art that highlighted the many facets of humanity and set the bar high for truly authentic and inclusive storytelling.
