Jessica Rodriguez, Univision

Years in Industry: 18

Education: B.A., Fordham University, MBA, Stanford University

Rodriguez has been relentless in her efforts to refresh Univision’s content strategy. She’s given iconic telenovelas a new life by placing them in “The Collection” anthology for a new generation, but she’s certainly not living in the past. In the summer of 2019, Rodriguez broke new ground for the net with “Juntos El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca” (Together, The Heart Is Never Wrong), the first Spanish-language US broadcast television series featuring a same-sex couple as the main protagonists.

How has pandemic changed the industry’s future?
In our case the pandemic has reinforced the pivotal role we play for our community. We continue to be a constant and trusted companion, but today, this companionship is more important and meaningful than ever. We provide a safe harbor during trying and unprecedented times, a way for our consumers to feel more connected to others like them and we foster a sense of belonging and inclusion. The pandemic reminds us to focus on our audience’s deeply held values around family, faith, collectivism, duty, progress and cultural pride.

Last content I streamed:
My niece’s high school graduation. She is part of the resilient, and inspiring Class of 2020.

Last show binged not on our network:
A Spanish series, “Vivir Sin Permiso (Unauthorized Living).”

What about travel used to annoy you but that now you actually miss?
I used to be annoyed about crowds when I traveled. You name it: crowded TSA lines, boarding gates, taxi pickup, jammed up highways, etc. I was annoyed by it all. Now I just simply miss the bustle of people trying to get to where they are going and the sights and sounds of a city in motion.

Working from home has taught me:
Working from home hasn’t necessarily taught me, but rather, reinforced what an incredible talent base we have at Univision. We didn’t skip a beat working from home, and actually ended the 2019/2020 season with our best results in years. Our Univision Family continues to prove how innovative, adaptable and what a deep sense of mission we carry for our Hispanic community.
