Mathew rose to his current post earlier this year and now oversees total home security and home automation solutions for the company. He’s focusing on furthering the expansion of these businesses, specifically by revamping the Xfinity Home go-to-market strategy, including expanding into additional sales channels, revising product pricing and packaging, and developing new smart home offerings. With regard to diversity and inclusion, “We should step up our efforts across all areas, but in the leadership ranks in particular,” he says. “This will take an investment of time now but will have great long-term benefits.”
In what areas should the industry step up its efforts with regard to diversity and inclusion?
We should step up our efforts across all areas, but in the leadership ranks in particular. It’s important for companies, large and small, to identify great talent at the junior levels and invest in coaching and mentoring diverse individuals to create a robust pipeline of capable future leaders. This will take an investment of time now but will have great long-term benefits.
What’s your best advice to someone just entering the video content/ distribution industry?
Regardless of industry, my best advice is to work collaboratively across teams to drive innovation and bring the best ideas to the surface. None of us know it all. Learn to listen (vs. waiting to speak) and to understand all points of view. It’s important to align your work (and those of your team) to the strategy which will drive the most business value. The competitive landscape is changing rapidly and there is no time to work in silos. We must work together to win.
What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three years ago?
The pace of innovation has accelerated dramatically over the last few years, particularly in the IOT/smart home space. Tech giants are investing billions to “own” the smart home. Additionally, startups continue to enter the smart home space with new and innovative technologies leveraging AI (artificial intelligence) & ML (machine learning) to solve specific consumer problems. In our service provider sector, it’s important to continue to push the pace of innovation and leverage our strengths in providing integrated solutions and front-line support to continue to be leaders and drive mass-market adoption of smart home services.
