Wendell Scott

Described as a beacon for diverse employees, Scott was knocking down doors for future leaders long before DEI became a priority for many companies. With his self-confidence and dedication, he’s helped marginalized people become successful not only at Disney, but also in the industry as a whole. Scott, a proud alum of the NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program at UCLA, has paved the way for others to follow his lead by launching the “Belong Sponsorship Program.” The year-long initiative aims to develop underrepresented talent within Disney Ad Sales by pairing them with an executive to offer professional mentorship and advocacy. Through the program, Scott and his team made 45 matches. And he’s humble, to boot. “I have the good fortune of ‘being in the room where it happens,’ and I have used my station and my voice to advocate for equity in recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion,” Scott says.

Do you think there has been significant progress on DEI in the industry in the past year?
Yes. It’s a start, but a good start. The equality of opportunity, growth and inclusion will take some time. It will take endurance and stamina.

I have the good fortune of “being in the room where it happens,” and I have used my station and my voice to advocate for equity in recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion. I have also led Sponsorship Programs, matching diverse colleagues with leaders of influence.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs three years ago?
With regards to Diversity and Inclusion, the attention to delivering content and advertising to people of color has been amplified more than ever in my career.
