Val Boreland

Boreland and her team helped lead USA to complete a record-breaking year as the top cable entertainment network in 2017. On Syfy, she premiered “Futurama,” a key acquisition that heralded the network’s entry into animation, driving down the median viewership age. Meanwhile, Superman prequel series “Krypton” was Syfy’s best premiere in more than three years. Her team has also launched the acquisition of JK Rowling’s Wizarding World and the Harry Potter franchise. Boreland says Rowling also serves as a personal inspiration. “The world she has imagined in her head… makes me want to be a writer,” Boreland says.

Who is an inspirational woman you admire, and why?
JK Rowling. Her “rags to riches” story is remarkable but what’s more remarkable is the world she has imagined in her head and how she has brought it to life for millions of people and multiple generations. She makes me want to be a writer.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three years ago?
The abundance of women being put in senior leader roles. I haven’t seen one women put into a position she wasn’t qualified for or didn’t deserve.

If there were a reality show based on your office, what would it be called?
“The Amazing Race”
