Sandra Lau

Lau keeps busy leading HR efforts in Comcast Cable, notably leading the integration of Comcast’s corporate teams with the 2018 Sky acquisition. Outside of Comcast, she took on a significant leadership role with PBA, expanding their reach and exposure to large corporations in the Philly area. She’s an active mentor and works to provide opportunities to her mentees. “I am a person of color who was raised in an impoverished community,” Lau says. “At this time, I do feel more accountability and empowerment, and am spending a lot of discretionary time furthering our company’s efforts.”

The conversation about racial injustice in 2020 has been… collectively painful, impactful, and inspirational to many in this country.

In what ways can companies best show a sincere commitment to diversity and inclusion?
Companies should keep up the dialogue about social justice, confront it, and not tolerate actions that do not align with the company’s values regarding equality.

What initiatives in our industry best embrace diversity?
Our industry has the unique position to make progress with digital literacy and digital equity. We can create products and sponsor services that pave the way to economic mobility for underserved communities.

What are some of the tough conversations this industry needs to have?
Our industry can provide meaningful products and equipment to care for the technological limitations within underserved communities, both metropolitan and rural areas, but we should strive to dig deeper. We can increase our social impact through child mentorship programs, adult apprenticeship programs, and educator advocacy.

How have you been a champion of diversity & inclusion in your professional life?
I am a person of color who was raised in an impoverished community. I can understand some but not all of the challenges these individuals encounter through their personal and professional lives, and it’s heartbreaking. I have spent time mentoring women and people of color and also participating in our company’s affinity groups. At this time, I do feel more accountability and empowerment, and am spending a lot of discretionary time furthering our company’s efforts.

Which current shows (on linear and streaming) best embrace diversity?
I’m very fond of “Queer Eye.” I’m not a binger – frankly do not have tube time because work and kids occupy me. But over the last few weeks, I found Queer Eye. I can’t tell you how many dimensions of social injustice the show and hosts face, and they make meaningful impact!
