Lopez is the top exec overseeing operations, financial performance and customer service for Oregon/SW Washington. This past year saw him rebuilding the region’s senior leadership team, spearheading local efforts to launch Xfinity Mobile and leading his region to be tops among Comcast territories as a United Way donor for the fourth year in a row. “Be ready to lead change and be bold” is Lopez’s advice for newcomers to the industry. “The pace of innovation, competition and new opportunities is fast and furious. In order to remain relevant in our industry you have to be in touch with changing consumer expectations and the way entertainment is integrated into their lives.”

A February 2018 UCLA study revealed that of the 45 new scripted shows approved for 2017-18 across broadcast, cable and digital platforms, only four were from creators of color, all of whom were black. What is your reaction to this report?
It is surprising that see such a low number of minority-created shows. We need to support and provide the platform to ensure we are reflecting our diverse audiences.

What’s your best advice to someone just entering the video content/distribution industry?
Be ready to lead change and be bold: the pace of innovation, competition and new opportunities is fast and furious. In order to remain relevant in our industry you have to be in touch with changing consumer expectations and the way entertainment is integrated into their lives. Only by building value through great innovation and exceptional experiences, will you win.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three years ago?
The proliferation of multichannel video program distributors (MVPDs) driven by continued innovation in our industry. Also, our companywide commitment to making the customer experience our best product.
