Martinez makes sure HBO’s programming reflects its diverse audience 24/7. And not just on the screen. She and her team launched art exhibit “The O.G. Experience,” inspired by the premium net’s drama “O.G.,” and developed a comprehensive campaign for “Insecure” that included block parties in Brooklyn and pop-up nail salons. “I believe our industry can do a better job of recruiting women and ensuring they have a path to senior positions by simply taking the same risks they take with men when hiring them, promoting them, and compensating them.”

How can the industry do a better job of recruiting women and ensuring they have a path to senior positions?
I believe our industry can do a better job of recruiting women and ensuring they have a path to senior positions by simply taking the same risks they take with men when hiring them, promoting them, and compensating them. It’s pretty simple if you think about it.

What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?
Your diversity, uniqueness, and authenticity are your greatest assets. I wish I had figured that out by 13 instead of at 38.

Which current shows best reflect the kind of women’s roles you like to see and why?
Euphoria is a very authentic and artistically compelling view of what adolescents have to grapple with in a world consumed by social media. Social media asks you to over share yourself while teens are still trying to become themselves. I’d like to see more brave stories, featuring diverse casts and subject matters that tackle real issues such as teenage angst, love, relationships, mental illness, trauma, addiction, and identity in a way that brings awareness to these issues and elevates them to conversations that can lead to solutions.
