Four years into building an industry-leading security program for Cox, Keever this past year also established a new Analytics Center of Excellence for the company’s operations, product and technology departments. She also recently enhanced focus on the threat of nation states, remediation of security vulnerabilities and reduction of the company’s public-facing network footprint. To boot, her team has conducted training and awareness campaigns to reduce inappropriate access, risk of a breach, fines and lawsuits. She views Me Too as a positive movement, but notes, “We need to ensure that evidence is carefully considered so that we do not swing the pendulum too far and cause harm to people who might not be guilty of what accusers have claimed.”
Do you see any potential backlash to the Me Too/Time’s Up movements?
It is positive that action is being taken related to legitimate victims and I do not want to discount that. However, I fear that, taken to an extreme, we might move into a guilty until proven innocent movement. We need to ensure that evidence is carefully considered so that we do not swing the pendulum too far and cause harm to people who might not be guilty of what accusers have claimed.
What’s a recent example of a step forward for women in the media industry?
I think it is a giant step forward that we are seeing all different types of women as examples in the media industry today. No longer is there one cookie-cutter look or behavior type that leads to success. We are seeing diverse women in terms of background, physical appearance, personality, age, etc. It is real progress to see the faces of so many different types of women so that younger women can find some version of themselves as a role model.
Who is an inspirational woman you admire, and why?
Condoleezza Rice—I admire her because she has accomplished many different things and came from a humble background. She has such grace and never made an issue that she was the first diverse woman at anything she has done. She carries herself gracefully and drives forward without regard to any obstacles. She has done so many different and interesting things.
