Jason Gumbs

Gumbs leads a team of 1,000 employees across three states. Under his direction, the region has significantly grown customer relationships and reduced customer churn—but he isn’t resting on his laurels. Up next is a new trial intended to continue to create more customer-friendly packages, simplify billing and grow customer loyalty. His advice for newcomers to the industry? “Don’t confine yourself to one area of the business. Try to learn more and be open-minded to new opportunities. Your growth in the industry is only limited by your willingness to grow both personally and professionally.”

What’s a recent example of a step forward for diversity in the industry?
Comcast and several other large companies have successfully launched diversity-enhancement groups known as Employee Resource Groups. We currently have six groups that support veterans, people of color, people with disabilities, women, young professionals and the LGBTQ community. These programs are open to all employees and give them opportunities to learn about their coworkers’ experiences in ways that develop them both personally and professionally. I currently serve as an executive sponsor for one of these groups and I consider it an honor.

What’s your best advice to someone just entering the video content/distribution industry?
Find your passion. Also, don’t confine yourself to one area of the business. Try to learn more and be open-minded to new opportunities. Your growth in the industry is only limited by your willingness to grow both personally and professionally. Find a mentor to help you create a pathway into your career and organization. That’s an important part of your career growth.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three years ago?
The video space has become more competitive than it’s ever been. It’s required us to think differently about the business. That’s why I really love our competitive plan with X1 as a platform. It puts us in a great position to win market share against the competition.

If there were a reality show based on your office, what would it be called?
“Dancing With the Stars,” because we’ve got to be creative, competitive and work well together every day. We also challenge each other to get better each and every day.
