How do you personally define “powerful” in the workplace today? Power isn’t about having a big title or the loudest voice. It’s the ability to influence, lead and drive change through consensus. Being powerful means earning the trust and respect of your peers and bosses alike and inspiring the team/s to action toward a common or new goal.
What’s a piece of advice you ignored that you’re glad you did in hindsight? “Put your head down, do good work and success will come.” Maybe, but why be passive? Take charge of your career; make a plan and then work your plan. Success comes when you speak up, raise your hand and proactively solve problems before they land on your /your boss’s desk. Doing good work is table stakes, but ‘putting your head down’ is akin to putting your head in the sand; the world will pass you by.
What advice would you give young women entering the business world today? This advice is for anyone entering the workforce: show up, be curious and make yourself known (see above). If your office is on a 3/2 schedule, maybe come in a fourth day. Networking is still a thing. Do a little more than the person sitting to the left and right of you. Always volunteer for new work or an extra project; embrace every opportunity to learn and grow your skillset and you will stand alone among your peers.
