FCC chmn Julius Genachowski called an FCC staff meeting Fri morning to announce that he will leave in the coming weeks. News of the announcement leaked Thurs evening.

"I didn’t ask you here today to say goodbye. There will be other opportunities for farewells. I asked you here because I wanted to say thank you," Genachowski told staffers.

He rattled off a list of agency accomplishments. "America’s broadband economy is thriving," he said, and mobile went from "laggard to leader."

No exact date yet for Genachowski or Republican commish Robert McDowell’s departures. Both have said they will leave in the coming weeks.
