In the Wild: Cox Mobile Crowns Phone Case Design Winners

Last year, Cox Mobile and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America joined forces to create a new contest that taps into teens’ creativity and curiosity through phone case designs. Now in its second year, the initiative continued to spotlight the theme of “A World Within Reach—Future Icons,” and after months of voting and deliberation, two honorees were selected to receive scholarships and grant funding.
The pair, named David and Peyton, will each receive a $25,000 scholarship to support their educational and professional goals. Only the grand prize winner got a $25,000 scholarship last year, but Cox Mobile wanted to double down on its commitment to youth empowerment and matched the two scholarship amounts.
David, the grand prize winner who comes from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, will see his club receive a $25,000 technology grant. His design “envisions a future where art, technology and nature grow together toward a sustainable world” and was chosen by a panel of judges from Cox Communications and BGCA, including TV personality and BGCA alum Mario Lopez. In addition to his phone case winning gold, David was named the BGCA Virginia Peninsula Youth of the Year.
Peyton, meanwhile, was named the nationwide fan favorite, earning her a $10,000 technology grant for her club in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. As a member of the Cherokee Nation, Peyton’s design was inspired by her culture “and the constant changes we see in technology and the world around us.” Over 11,000 voters participated in the fan contest.
“David represents the determination and drive that Boys & Girls Clubs strive to nurture in every young person, and Peyton’s creativity and passion are exactly what we hope to see every day in Clubs across the country. Opportunities like this contest encourage teens to explore their talents, share their stories, and see what’s possible for their future,” said Chat Hartman, BGCA’s National VP, Corporate Partnerships and Engagement.
While David and Peyton’s cases were deemed winners, 20 designs from Cox’s five regions were finalists. Those can be viewed online, as well as the inspiration for each phone case illustration.
