Murphy was a breakout star at Comcast, becoming the first African American female and millennial to own a P&L within the Comcast Business division. When the COO role at Astound opened this year following the retirement of 44-year industry veteran Chris Fenger, she felt there was a calling for her to jump in and help unite the company, which has amassed a collection of acquisitions across the country, including Boston, Chicago and Seattle.
“Women need more access to rooms where decisions are being made. They should be encouraged to participate in strategic projects that drive change in the business and to step into the unfamiliar and uncomfortable.”
Name a woman today who you feel is changing the world. Why? There are so many women that I admire but today, I would like to elevate MacKenzie Scott. Through her philanthropic organization, MacKenzie Scott has reportedly given away billions of her own personal fortune to support non-profit organizations all across the United States and the world. The throughline of her philanthropic efforts is that she is focused on combating racial and social inequity. Many of her large grants went to foundations of Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and to organizations in the geographic south, where there is a great opportunity to improve childhood education. While her financial contributions are impressive, it is her intentionality, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making our world a better place that I admire the most.
