Spires oversees five dedicated software teams responsible for directives such as product release planning and strategic technical discussions. This year he led the implementation of the Apps framework on the Layer3 TV set-top box, which allows YouTube, Pandora, iHeart radio and all future apps to work with Layer3 TV. He also delivered the product’s Alexa integration and oversaw two large development efforts to enhance the STB’s speed and consumer satisfaction. One of these efforts, now rolled out to customers, has greatly reduced the number of customer complaints regarding recording and navigating the interface. The second surrounds Layer3 TV’s next-gen UX and is designed to improve the smoothness and responsiveness of the boxes. Spires biggest accomplishment to date: “The relationships that I have developed with members of my team. This intangible product has taken several years to develop and pays dividends every day.”
What has been your biggest professional accomplishment to date?
The relationships that I have developed with members of my team. This intangible product has taken several years to develop and pays dividends every day.
What attracted you to this industry?
We put virtually unlimited information and entertainment into people’s homes. That’s an incredible thing and certainly stoked my interest in the satellite / cable industries. Being a part of a start-up and getting to build a television product from the ground up has kept me here!
Best piece of professional advice you’ve received?
Expecting other people to change to accommodate how you think things should be done is nonsense. Find a win-win that works for both of you.
What is your favorite app these days?
Evernote. It helps my stay organized and keep up with notes and lists.
Favorite trending hashtag?
#10X
What product or service can you not live without?
Call me old fashioned, but I love Layer 3 TV cable television service because I can’t live without my Alabama Crimson Tide football!
