Charter Sheds Two EVPs as Jeffery Flattens Structure for ‘Great Cable Comeback’

New Charter COO Nick Jeffery didn’t waste any time shaking up the executive suite as he seeks to launch the “cable comeback,” with EVP, Chief Commercial Officer Adam Ray and EVP, CMO Sharon Peters out, according to an email obtained by CFX.
“I am increasingly convinced that our unmatched scale in broadband internet, our distinctive video assets and attractive mobile offer are market advantages. However, in recent years we have failed to marshal those advantages into a winning strategy and have underperformed the markets, and our own expectations,” Jeffery wrote in the announcement.
He went on to say he’s announcing a “simpler, flatter operating structure” that he believes will help Charter get closer to customers, “move faster with fewer layers” and focus on improving internet growth and customer service. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us. I am determined that we will deliver The Great Cable Comeback,” wrote Jeffery, who started the COO role at Charter Sept. 1 with a LinkedIn post declaring that “The Great Comeback starts here.”
Ray’s position is not being filled. The 21-year Charter veteran rose through the ranks on the sales and field operations side, eventually serving as Regional VP, Field Operations for the Florida Region before being named EVP in 2020 and adding Chief Commercial Officer in 2022. His team drove the commercial execution of Spectrum One along with Charter’s $1,000 Savings Guarantee and video packages built around the Xumo Stream Box.
A search is underway for a new CMO, with SVP, Chief Creative Officer Simon Cassels to serve in the role on an interim basis. Peters came over to Charter as GVP, Marketing in 2016 after Optimum completed its acquisition of Cablevision. She helped launch the Spectrum brand following the Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks transactions and was named CMO in 2022. Most recently she oversaw the rebrand and launch of Spectrum products to the former Cox customers.
“Please join me in thanking Adam and Sharon for everything they have contributed to Spectrum over many years,” Jeffery wrote, before outlining a new reporting structure that has Christian Ruiz (Spectrum Consumer), Keith Dardis (Spectrum Business), Jeff Breaux (Spectrum Wholesale), Cassels and Paul Woelk (Business Planning and Business Intelligence) joining Cliff Hagan (Customer Operations) and Tom Monaghan (Field Operations) as his direct reports. Charter is hiring a Head of Integration and Chief of Staff who also will report to Jeffery. EVP, Chief HR Officer Paul Marchand will continue to report to Charter CEO Chris Winfrey, but will also serve as a stand-in until an HR leader is named for Jeffery’s org.
Jeffery noted that Spectrum Wholesale, which includes RapidScale and Segra, will remain operationally separate from Spectrum. It’s being run by former Cox Communications exec Breaux.
