Advice I would give a recent graduate: Embrace your unique journey and leverage it as a strength. My personal experience as a Korean American with English as a second language taught me resilience and empathy, two qualities that have been invaluable in my career. Don’t be afraid to bring your whole self to the table – your unique background and perspectives are assets that can drive innovation and inclusivity.
Will AI help or hurt diversity and inclusion? AI holds great promise for advancing diversity and inclusion, but it’s a double-edged sword. As a Korean American who’s faced both personal and professional hurdles, I’ve seen how AI can level the playing field and make our industry more inclusive – helping brands connect with diverse audiences in meaningful ways and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups. However, we need to remain vigilant and avoid reinforcing biases. Think of AI like a digital chameleon: it highlights both the adaptability and potential risks of generative AI in media and entertainment emphasizing the need for transparency, ethical guidelines, and critical thinking in its usage. When used responsibly, AI can drive real progress, the potential benefits spanning the ecosystem so our industry can become fairer and more representative.
What movie or show is a must-watch for celebrating diversity? Putting aside the film’s lavish portrayal of characters and opulence, “Crazy Rich Asians” is the first major Hollywood movie with a predominantly Asian cast since “Joy Luck Club” (25 years ago!). It broke the typical monolithic stereotypes of Asians in Western media, adding “swag” to Asian representation while also exploring the complex layers of family, tradition, and modernity.
What does work-life balance mean to you? To me, work-life balance starts with understanding what defines a “good life” for yourself – getting specific about what brings you true happiness and satisfaction. This understanding helps set your priorities, whether they involve family, friends, hobbies, or professional achievements. The journey will not always be perfectly balanced but true work-life balance means recognizing when to lean into one goal and when to shift focus toward another. It’s about making continuous adjustments rather than striving for a fixed state, always moving toward a clear sense of happiness and fulfillment.
