Brown has pushed the boundaries of traditional broadcasting by introducing new approaches, such as expanding primetime call-in programs and utilizing smartphone footage for real-time event coverage. With more than 30 years at the network, Brown continues to be a mentor to young talent, opening doors for the next generation of journalists. His focus on mentorship and fostering fresh perspectives has been crucial in helping C-SPAN adapt and thrive as it prepares for the future of political coverage and media.
Why do you think DEI has come under attack by some? DEI has been looked upon by some as the cousin of Affirmative Action. Last year’s Supreme Court decisions on Affirmative Action have brought this subject back into the national conversation, which further impacts views about DEI.
What nonprofit are you proud to champion? I serve as Chairman of the Board for the Pi Upsilon Lambda Charitable Foundation, which provides community support through mentoring, tutoring students and providing scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
What’s your boldest prediction about your industry in the next 10 years? Streaming media will continue to evolve with many traditional forms of television becoming casualties.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about diversity within your industry? There is diversity within the media industry overall, but not at all levels. The percentages shrink notably when you examine diversity at the management and executive levels. Diversity in the workplace has benefits industry wide, especially when it comes to covering stories that are reflective of a diverse society.
What does work-life balance mean to you? For me, work-life balance means engaging in activities (social, family, community service or hobbies) that help achieve a healthy well-being. In my professional role, I can’t turn the job off. I’m constantly thinking about our coverage and planning ahead, so it’s important that I also actively pursue interests that satisfy me personally.
