Michael Ahiakpor

As one of Tubi’s first six employees, Ahiakpor helped build the AVOD from the ground up. He was instrumental in growing Tubi to 25 million monthly active users across over 20 platforms. You know it had to be an especially proud moment when Fox snatched the service up this spring for $440 million. When it comes to tough conversations the industry needs to have, he questions the role content creators can play in exposing audiences to better realities. “What stereotypes are we perpetuating with our content? Does our storytelling encompass a diversity of thought and experiences or is it relegated to the glorification of the worst aspects of challenged communities?” he asks. “Are we balancing images of despair with depictions of hope, aspiration, and excellence?”

The conversation about racial injustice in 2020 has been… challenging. It’s difficult to change the minds and attitudes of others. We should strive to become the change we want to see in the world.

What are some of the tough conversations this industry needs to have?
What stereotypes are we perpetuating with our content? Does our storytelling encompass a diversity of thought and experiences or is it relegated to the glorification of the worst aspects of challenged communities? Are we balancing images of despair with depictions of hope, aspiration, and excellence? What role can content creators play in exposing audiences to the possibility of better realities?

How have you been a champion of diversity & inclusion in your professional life?
My professional accomplishments give me a platform to speak with authority and credibility with underserved and overlooked groups at the beginnings of their careers. I’ve been able to give talks to help introduce young minds to a potential future in technology; a domain often not considered by traditionally disadvantaged groups. My support also includes philanthropy as I have donated to the Orchid Foundation; a mentorship program for underserved girls.
