Understanding diversity is vital in public relations, and Phillips—who helped form AMC Networks’ diversity goals before its DEI department existed—serves as a sounding board for new initiatives, partnerships and sponsorships. She recently led press campaigns for AMC/AMC+’s “Dark Winds” and Acorn TV’s “Harry Wild”; collaborated on a brand refresh for AMCN’s streamer, Acorn TV; and oversaw a partnership with NASCAR and AMC/AMC+’s “Parish,” which reached 3.3M on FOX and had a social media reach of 1.5M+.
Who is an unsung DEI hero? It’s a cheeky, but timely, answer – Flavor Flav! Who knew the incredible impact he would have across women’s sports this year with his charitable endeavors. Go, Flav, go! We’re going to get you that torch for 2028, bud!
What do you think is the biggest misconception about diversity within your industry? That we’re doing enough, or that there’s a cap on how much should be done. Diversity is endless and forever expanding, and makes for incredible storytelling, production execution, and marketing. There’s constriction across diverse programming due to viewership or impact not hitting desired levels, however that same programming was never given the launch advantages of the programming it’s being compared to, so how could it perform the same?
What nonprofit are you proud to champion and why? I’m a big fan of No Kid Hungry, The Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign, and Save The Children. Injustice manifests in many ways and affects many, but none more than innocent children. If ever I were to start my own charity, it would be focused on the wellbeing and future success of disadvantaged youth.
What movie or show is must-watch for celebrating diversity? Diversity within programming for me is being immersed in a new culture or lifestyle where I’m taught without being spoon fed. I can so easily tout “Dark Winds,” “The Terror: Infamy,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Jane The Virgin,” “Lovecraft Country,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Love After Lockup”– but for me, a must-watch is “90 Day Fiancé.” I understand this may be a controversial answer, but there is truly nothing else on TV with a more diverse cast and representation of cultures from around the world. Each season, I learn something new about a culture different from my own and it fuels me, particularly as someone who loves to travel and soak up new experiences. (The drama is also fun – and I don’t watch a lot of reality TV!)
Will AI help or hurt diversity and inclusion? It depends on how the AI is used. If for storytelling, in the long run, my prediction is that AI will not have a lasting impact on diversity and inclusion. People, cultures, lifestyles are so nuanced and multifaceted, situations and personalities are shaped by so many influences – artificial intelligence will never be able to truly grasp the necessary history and depth. However, if AI is used for data – ex: the rate at which viewers consume and appreciate diverse storytelling – then I think it could have a positive effect. Decision makers love hard numbers to back up decisions.
What does work-life balance mean to you? At this stage in my life, work/life balance means being able to excel at my job within a normal workday while having the capability to not only show up for things I enjoy outside of work, but also be able to be mentally present and enjoy those activities. I try to avoid burnout by taking vacation, by leaving the office at a decent time without being glued to my phone, and by setting boundaries. I want to enjoy my job and life outside the job. And when the two combine – what a gift.
