John Hsu

Hsu focuses on investments and acquisitions at AMC Networks. As such, he led the company’s investments in virtual MVPDs Philo and FuboTV, and content creators Adaptive Studios, Funny or Die, Levity Live and Telltale Games. He firmly believes his success—from an eight-year-old political refugee to treasurer of one of today’s most influential media companies—is due in large part to the opportunities that have been afforded him. He says, “There’s a real need to increase diversity at the senior level so that companies reflect the demographics they serve.”

How can diversity be better incorporated into the recruiting process?
Companies should ensure that all open positions are truly available to all applicants. Strategic changes in the hiring process are necessary to prioritize reaching and attracting a diverse pool of candidates. We need to bring in and support different voices so that we can introduce new ideas and change into organizations.

What questions is the industry not yet asking in its efforts to be more diverse and inclusive that it should be?
Leaders need to be asking if our companies are reflecting the market. There’s a real need to increase diversity at the senior level so that companies reflect the demographics they serve. It’s important for the next generation of leaders to be as diverse as the world around us.

Which current television show/s best embrace diversity?
“Black-ish.” “Black-ish” embraces real issues while it entertains. Additionally, it provides a point of view that most TV viewers don’t get to see.
