Dana Zimmer

When Nexstar closed its Tribune acquisition in 2019, it didn’t just pick up more broadcast stations and a national cable network. It also scored Zimmer, a top-notch negotiator who cut her teeth at Comcast before she was named President of Distribution for Tribune in 2013. At Nexstar, she’s successfully negotiated retransmission consent for its 199 local stations as well as carriage for NewsNation. Zimmer is behind the single largest portion of Nexstar’s revenue, with distribution dollars for 2020 topping $2.2 billion. She was promoted from President, Chief Distribution and Strategy Officer to Distribution President in October, with CEO Perry Sook praising her for expanding Nexstar’s reach, especially among digital and streaming users. While this magazine celebrates the ladies, Zimmer appreciates the importance of male allyship. “Most of my male counterparts from previous jobs and my current job have had a tremendous impact on my life, both professionally and personally,” she says.

What’s one way your company has broadened the recruiting process to ensure greater diversity?
Nexstar has shown its commitment to DEI initiatives by establishing a DEI council, offering mentoring and shadow programs to promote job enrichment and education from within, and by hiring a full time executive to oversee DEI initiatives. The company also conducted a companywide employee survey to learn more about what steps can be taken to make the workforce more diverse. As a result, Nexstar modified its benefits package to increase the minimum wage paid to employees and improved the maternity and paternity leave policy. All of these are steps in the right direction toward making Nexstar a place where all employees can thrive.

Do you have an example of male allyship that made a difference to you?
Yes, most of my male counterparts from previous jobs and my current job have had a tremendous impact on my life, both professionally and personally. I continue to learn from these role models, who have been generous with their time and friendships. I wouldn’t be where I am today without guidance and support from men who helped me along the way and continue to do so.
