There’s still a whole world of LGBTQ+ content left to explore, and Callaway wants more programmers to start diving in. “Where is the legal drama or procedural show with the gay lead, the queer network sitcom, the diverse lineup of LGBTQ+ stories, or numerous Hollywood theatrical releases?” he says. He’s asked his team to step up and answer that call, broadcasting documentaries like “The Lesbian Bar Project” that takes a closer look at those dying institutions and “Woman on Fire,” the story of the first openly transgender NYC firefighter. He’s the Executive Champion of the PLUS employee resource group, which includes LGBTQ+ employees and allies that support diverse hiring, community outreach, representation and personal and professional development.
What is the state of LGBTQ+ representation in media? It’s great to see much LGBTQ+ representation in the media now, but there is still a lot of territory yet to explore. Where is the legal drama or procedural show with the gay lead, the queer network sitcom, the diverse lineup of LGBTQ+ stories, or numerous Hollywood theatrical releases? We do have Nicholas Stoller’s “Bros” on the way, which is exciting. My favorite show from last year that centered around a queer story was “Heartstopper”. I liked that it celebrated an ordinary coming of age experience, and it just happened to be a gay one.
How do benefits need to improve to become inclusive of all families and individuals? AMC Networks is so supportive of all families and individuals in our benefits. I think the best thing to do is reach out directly to employees, and ask employee resource groups: “What are we missing?” That honest feedback might help fill in gaps that would help all employees and their families.
Favorite media milestone moment in LGBTQ+ history? Each moment or milestone builds on the past, and opens doors for the future, so I will focus on a recent one. I don’t think you can underestimate the importance of after 240+ years, we have a very visible and inspiring US Cabinet Secretary. Pete Buttigieg as the US Secretary of Transportation is a role model and a media figure who is poised for a bigger moment.
