Baker-Lane knows the power of representation on both sides of the camera and strives to ensure all marginalized groups are included. A longtime champion of diversity, Baker-Lane played a vital role in Amazon Studio’s partnership with IllumiNative in creating the IllumiNative Episodic Directors Program to develop a pipeline of emerging Indigenous filmmakers. Her team has also collaborated with Deaf Talent Creative Lab, Easterseals, ADA Lead On and RespectAbility to highlight creative talent and ensure accessibility across all productions.
Who is an unsung DEI hero? They are often the people behind the scenes—the coordinators, assistants and mid-level professionals who work tirelessly to implement and drive inclusive initiatives. They are the ones creating safe spaces, advocating for diverse talent and ensuring the day-to-day work of DEIA is done. Their contributions may not always be visible to customers, but they are the backbone of meaningful progress. Without their dedication and attention to detail, the larger goals would be far more challenging to achieve.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about diversity within your industry? One of the biggest misconceptions is that diversity in entertainment is focused solely on increasing representation on screen or that we will “arrive.” In reality, DEIA work is ongoing, multi-faceted and encompasses a holistic approach that impacts every phase of the content lifecycle. It requires creating space for everyone to have a seat at the table and ensuring all voices are heard to create the best outcome for the audience. Effective DEIA strategies prioritize authentic storytelling, inclusive hiring practices, and equitable opportunities behind the scenes. True inclusion takes time, intention and a commitment to long-term shifts.
Advice I would give a recent graduate: Stay curious, keep learning and give yourself grace. Progress over perfection. DEIA is a dynamic field, and the issues we tackle today will look different from the ones we face in the future. Seek out mentors, build relationships with people who don’t look like you or share your background and always be willing to adapt. Be fearless in asking questions and bold in pushing for the changes you want to see.
What does work-life balance mean to you? I aspire to have work-life harmony by relentlessly committing to being the best at the thing I am doing at the moment. When I am at work I am the best DEIA leader I can be, conversely when I am at home with my kids – I strive to be the best and most present mom. This allows me to create space for what matters most to me—whether it’s family, self-care or passion projects. It also means modeling boundaries that reflect well-being to my team. I prioritize my mental health, rest and joy to bring my best self to my professional and personal life.
