Deen has helped drive Scripps’ substantial growth by expanding online properties through a strategic balance of acquisitions, investments, divestitures and joint ventures. Each of his mentors shared advice he’s taken to heart: “Work hard and always have a great attitude towards whatever it is you’re doing. Build genuine relationships—quality over quantity,” Deen says. “And always hire and retain great people. You can only go as far as your team allows you to.”

Who has been your strongest mentor, and why?

I have been fortunate to have several across the companies I’ve worked for over the years.  What I’ve learned from each is consistent.  Work hard and always have a great attitude towards whatever it is you’re doing.  Build genuine relationships – quality over quantity. And always hire and retain great people.  You can only go as far as your team allows you to.

What qualities do you look for when making a new hire?

Team player, integrity, smart and intellectually curious.  Also, a sense of humor is always welcome!
