Mark Dzuban

Title: President & CEO, Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE)/International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE)

Years in Cable: 48

Education: AAS Degree, Electrical Technology; FCC General Class License (was First Class).

One Word that Best Describes Me: Anomaly

Thanks to Dzuban’s work, new programs and partnerships have driven SCTE membership from 14,000 to more than 22,000 within the past year. Using a holistic learning and development approach, he has aligned training with corporate goals and effective measurement of ROI. He also created the industry’s first DOCSIS 3.1 training program, enhanced energy management standards on the road to Energy 2020, expanded both corporate and international partnerships and spearheaded new veterans training initiatives.

The biggest innovation in cable over the last year was: Energy 2020 Adaptive Power Systems Interface Specification and Standards that will help to avoid over $1B in energy costs by the year 2020 for our industry

What does the future look like for skinny bundles and flexible packaging? Good. Looks like the consumer is looking for choice.

My dream would be for… my brain to be connected to the Internet of Things so it could think searches and control my personal environment, security, etc without physical interface.

Virtual reality is… highly valuable for business, military and gaming applications. I see future facilities troubleshooting with Virtual Reality—especially when situations involve toxic and radiological environments as well as remote or challenging access facilities.

Last show I watched not on my network(s): Military Channel. I served in Korea and enjoy the series on the “KOREA, the Forgotten War”

My first job: I had multiple jobs at the same time. Cutting Grass for my neighbors, Collecting Copper and Bottles for cash, Trapping Muskrats ($1.25 a pelt in the 60s!!!); I was the richest kid in the neighborhood.

Favorite charity event I work with: Wounded Warriors

What excites you most about DOCSIS 3.1? It gives our industry a path to leverage existing infrastructure and provide very competitive network capabilities to compete today and in the future.

“Star Trek” celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. So if Mr. Spock’s motto is “Live Long and Prosper,” mine is… Work hard, be independent and contribute to making our society a better place.

If this election year was a reality TV series, it would be called… “The Longest Day”

What was the last costume that you wore and why? Ugly Christmas Sweater. My wife and kids made me wear it.

What should cable do to improve its image? Customer service and experience.

My favorite hashtag is: #? Or # 000-/\/\/\/\:)= (rattlesnake with symbol art)

Best way to spend a Saturday night: Sitting next to Shawn, my sweetheart of 38 years, watching old movies with a good cup of coffee.

Name of my favorite Spotify playlist: I am still into the Eagles as well as lots of contemporary violin.

My cable industry mentor and why: Michael Fries and Balan Nair. They make Liberty Global a very well run organization.

Hoverboard, driverless car or drone: Each to his or her own. I am still working on driving my Jeep.

I watch the majority of programming on this device: 50/50 between my Samsung S7 and SONY 52” HD/3D

Favorite Podcast: None specific

My favorite newfound hobby: My son and I running our sawmill. We love the art of wood working.

My personal theme song is: “Desperado” or “Hotel California”

The technology that will most benefit cable over the next year is: Wireless! (WiFi)

Favorite vacation spot: My garage. I have traveled all over the world, so staying home is a dream come true.

My typical breakfast is: Leftovers. Especially Pizza.

My Starbucks order: Double Shot Expresso
