This particular “The Journey” series, now in its fifth season, once again showcases expert editing, behind-the-scenes footage and cinematic-like sound mixing. But what truly sets this series apart is its compelling storylines. The backstory of the players’ families, coaches and personal lives are made equally as significant as the students’ accomplishments on the court. Take Michigan State senior forward Adreian Payne, who on a team visit to a hospital befriended a young girl battling cancer and in turn became an important role model in her life—and she in his. Or sophomore Nik Stauskas, whose incessant practicing inspired YouTube videos of him shooting hoops, one of which caught him making 46 three-pointers in a row—in the rain! The series captures the players’ lives holistically, making it all the more enjoyable to watch.
