With the Comcast-TWC merger on the horizon, we’re guessing Ponnambalam will find innovative ways analytics can make the transition more fluid. “The availability of big data and analytics tools continues to grow in importance in the cable industry,” Ponnambalam says. “The increasing insights that are available will help almost all functional areas improve how they execute their jobs. Also, knowing how to consolidate massive amounts of data into manageable, insightful observations for management is a critical skill that will only grow in importance in the years to come.”

What’s the definition of diversity in 2014, and how can the cable industry do better in the area of inclusiveness?

Diversity is a broad mix of experiences, ideas and perspectives that can all be brought together to solve business issues. The cable industry can support this inclusiveness by continuing to broaden their employee base. While cable expertise is vital, we shouldn’t be afraid to bring in those with experience in other industries.

What qualities do you look for when making a new hire?

I like to hire people who can think critically and logically, and have a “can-do” attitude. Having a team that is capable of analyzing new business challenges and presenting options and solutions to those challenges can make all the difference in excelling in a competitive environment. I also look for a team player. We all have busy, stressful moments in our daily lives. Having someone who is flexible enough to work through these times, without losing their cool, makes the experience a lot more pleasant.

Name one emerging trend in cable we should all have our eyes on.
