Darrel Hegar
Hegar leads Charter field operations in the bustling Carolinas region—an area where he proved his chops while at TWC. Among his accomplishments, he oversaw a move to increase broadband Internet speeds in Charlotte and Raleigh by six-fold. Though Hegar hesitates to give the entire industry a grade on diversity, he notes, “The cable industry continues to consolidate and transform itself based on market needs. Charter is transforming the way it views diversity and is laying a great foundation for moving diversity to the next level. I hope we’ll see other companies transform their employee base to be more reflective of the customers they serve.”
What grade do you give the cable industry on diversity and why?
The cable industry continues to consolidate and transform itself based on market needs. So, I’m not sure if you can give the entire industry a grade. However, what we can examine is the actions of those companies that have the most opportunity to improve. A good example of this is Charter Communications. Charter is transforming the way it views diversity and is laying a great foundation for moving diversity to the next level. I hope we’ll see other companies transform their employee base to be more reflective of the customers they serve.
Favorite charity organization you work with?
I have a heart for and support a number of charitable organization. However, my favorite charity that I work with is the Benton Harbor High School Opportunity Scholarship (http://www.bhhsopportunity.com). This scholarship fund was created this year by my son Justin, a high school sophomore. It provides a one-time $5,000 scholarship to a deserving high-school senior, based on their academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement. Justin traveled to Benton Harbor High School (my old alma mater which is located in an impoverished city) this year to present the inaugural scholarship. I’m very proud of him and his desire to give back at such a young age.
