Claudia Teran
Teran’s attention to detail no doubt helped when negotiating rights extensions and contract renewals with major sports organizations, including multi-year deals for FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. She says when she was a summer associate with a law firm, one of the partners explained the importance of seemingly minor details. “Finding a spelling or punctuation error could lead a reader to subconsciously search for problems with the substance of our work, and make it less likely they would give the benefit of the doubt should an issue arise,” she recalls. “That sage advice has followed me—and I now pass it along to my mentees.”
How do you define diversity?
The dictionary defines diversity as the condition of being composed of differing elements. For me, those elements consist of different points of view, which are an asset. While those points of view can arise from many places—background, upbringing, culture, world view, etc. – in a business like ours, it often leads to challenging the status quo and providing new solutions to complex problems.
Best business advice you’ve received?
On the first day of being a summer associate at my law firm, a partner walked in and gave the introductory talk. His first piece of advice had to do with our work product: we needed to be concerned with details both big and small, because anything that was put out on the firm’s letterhead represented the quality of the law firm—and errors in even minor details would attack our credibility. Finding a spelling or punctuation error could lead a reader to subconsciously search for problems with the substance of our work, and make it less likely they would give the benefit of the doubt should an issue arise. That sage advice has followed me—and I now pass it along to my mentees.
