The number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices shipped in 2012 should top 1.5 billion, attributable to anything from wireless gear to connected home to the automotive market, says ABI Research. Regarding connected home, Wi-Fi currently is widely used for Internet access in connected TVs but wired connections also are used; 17 million Wi-Fi-enabled flat-panel TVs were shipped in 2011. The top six suppliers of Wi-Fi ICs include Broadcom, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell, Intel and Texas Instruments; these companies accounted for more than 85 percent of total market revenues last year.
