Level 3 Communications has announced it will expand the number of Ethernet switches on its U.S. network by almost 400 percent.

Level 3 also will make additional feature enhancements that will expand the company’s Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-certified Carrier Ethernet services portfolio.

By expanding the switching footprint, Level 3 is eliminating the need for backhaul of switched metro Ethernet applications and also providing a more efficient backhaul mechanism for higher layer services, such as Internet or voice.
