According to a newly published report by Dell’Oro Group, the worldwide service provider edge router market attained a record level in the third quarter of 2010. The research shows that the market expanded by more than 25 percent in the third quarter of 2010 compared with the same prior year period and surpassed $1.5 billion. Cisco Systems improved its market share lead in the third quarter, while Alcatel-Lucent overtook Juniper Networks for the second position.

"The demand for edge routers in mobile backhaul networks in North America has picked up significantly this year," said Shin Umeda, vice president at Dell’Oro Group, in a statement. "Wireless service providers are beefing up their network capacity with IP/MPLS technologies as they race to roll out new high-speed data services and plan for the growth of mobile data traffic."
