Greg Hickman
Senior Director, Communications & Interactive Media
WICT
Hickman didn’t need to drink the Kool Aid to know social media is a critical tool in connecting a nonprofit with its members and with the greater industry it serves. When that industry is the cable industry, the stakes are even higher. With Hickman’s guidance, WICT made a strategic decision to engage more actively in social media to attract new members, establish itself as a thought leader on gender diversity and career development issues, and add value to members and sponsors. We say, keep up the good work!
Without social media, the world would be just a little bit… Quieter – but also less engaging and much less interesting.
When it comes to digital trends, what’s something the kids are doing today that we’ll all be doing tomorrow? How we interact with technology is evolving rapidly. How many of us have witnessed a child touching the screen of a TV, expecting the channel to change or more information to pop up? Touchscreens are rapidly becoming the norm, and it probably won’t be long before we’re all waving our hands in the air like Tom Cruise in “Minority Report” as we sort through information.
What’s your favorite digital toy and why?My iPad has become my most faithful companion and a tool that I can’t live without. I take it with me everywhere I go, and I can do just about everything with it – no more bulky laptop! I can keep on top of our social networks and stay in touch with the office, as well as watch movies, read books and play games.
What’s on your wish list for the iPhone 5?The only thing I really miss about my BlackBerry was that little red light that blinked when you had new messages. That visual indicator was really helpful and I do notice its absence on my iPhone. I’m sure it would violate the Apple aesthetic to have a blinking light like that, but it would be nice if they could figure it a way to make it work somehow.
