BigBand Networks today announced a software control plane that unifies the delivery and management of video services to the MPEG set-top boxes and IP-based devices.

The Converged Video Exchange (CVEx) removes the barriers between disparate video service types–including video on demand (VOD), switched digital video (SDV) and IPTV–by dynamically controlling the allocation of all RF and IP video services within a single bandwidth pool and providing one view into service and resource usage.

By unifying the control plane, BigBand aims to manage the rise of “tremendous complexity…so that in the future, it won’t matter if it is wired or wireless, legacy or next-generation IP,” BigBand COO David Heard said in a statement.

“Our job is to arm our customers with a more simplified and nimble video delivery solution that consistently delivers a quality video experience to multiple devices, anywhere,” he stated.
