The Multimedia Research Group (MRG) predicts that global over-the-top video services will exceed $11 billion iand that the Internet set-top box (ISTBs) penetration will exceed 57 million units in 2012.

“The real question isn’t whether service providers should implement OTT, as most analysts already agree,” MRG Analyst Mike Galli said in a statement. “The real question is how and with what results.”

The MRG report analyzing OTT opportunities disputes the notion that TV sets with Ethernet ports will replace ISTBs in the next five years. “ISTBs will continue to be strong players beyond 2015,” MRG President Gary Shultz stated.
