Optical-network provider Opnext Inc. recently teamed with the Dutch SURFnet [the National Research and Education Network (NREN)] for a successful 100Gbps coherent field trial between the National Supercomputing Center, SARA, in Amsterdam and CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire – European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva. Opnext used its OTS-100FLX 100Gbps digital coherent subsystem for the field trial, using next-gen 100Gbps single carrier technology and soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) to optically link Amsterdam to Geneva with a transmission distance of 1,650km using only erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). “This trial is another clear demonstration that coherent 100Gbps PM-QPSK transmission technology is tolerant to a very large range of impairments (i.e. chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, noise) and allows the use of alien wavelengths in research networks over DWDM systems from multiple vendors,” notes Roeland Nuijts, optical network architect at SURFnet… KPN, NTT Docomo Inc., Rogers Communications, SingTel, Telefónica (through its Telefónica Digital unit), Telstra and Vimpelcom inked a MOU to form an alliance to support a single, global platform that multinational businesses will leverage to enable connected devices in multiple countries. The goal of the global alliance is to create efficiencies for manufacturers and enhance the end user experience by enabling delivery of a global product with a single SIM, helping to eliminate roaming costs in the countries of participating operators. The centralized management of SIM status and performance of M2M devices across the globe will be managed from a single Web interface with Jasper Wireless’ Control Center…ADVA Optical Networking just finished trialing a new automated multi-layer network in northern Germany, built on the ADVA FSP 3000 and Juniper Networks‘ MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers. The new network uses ROADM technology, RAYcontrol GMPLS control plane software and multi-layer configuration mechanisms developed in the IST project ONE, funded by the European Union. During the course of the trial, Telefonica I+D, ADVA Optical Networking and Juniper Networks collaborated with European universities to enable multi-layer restoration and automated DWDM service provisioning between IP/MPLS routers. The trial helped Telefonica verify the potential for reduced opex/capex while driving new levels of speed and efficiency. According to Telefonica I+D analysis, multi-layer restoration led to a more than 37-percent reduction in capex for IP/DWDM networks…In a new contract between the players, Cable & Wireless Panama tapped Israel’s Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. to provide a Sky-Edge II broadband network aimed at delivering broadband Internet and telephony connectivity nationwide. C&W already has more than 1,300 Gilat sites in operation, and the new expansion includes solar-powered VSATs as well as installation, maintenance and operation of the Sky Edge II hub equipment and VoIP gateways. The solar-powered solution will be supported by new outbound capacity from Telesat’s TelStar 11N…Mobile network security provider AuthenTec teamed with Jupiter Telecommunications Co. Ltd. to deliver J:COM’s Video On Demand (VOD) services to the operator’s 2.5 million subscribers in Japan. The operator will use AuthenTec’s downloadable DRM Fusion and DRM Fusion Server to protect and deliver its VOD content to Apple and Android mobile devices via a new Xvie service launched May 22…Broadband developer Cambium Networks appointed Horsebridge Network Systems Limited as its latest U.K. distributor to further expand its U.K. portfolio of point-to-point (PTP) and point-to-multipoint (MTP) solutions across telecom and other industry sectors.
