Netflix Nods and Knocks
Original content + Netflix = Emmy nomination. That winning combination has paved the way to 54 Emmy nods for Netflix this year, up from 34 nods last year. With a strategy focused on producing original content, the world’s largest video streaming service has moved from underdog to top dog in the eyes of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Following behind HBO’s 94 nods and FX’s 56 nods, Netflix is the third most successful network with regards to Emmy nominations. Importantly, broadcast network powerhouses NBC, ABC and CBS fall in the shadow of HBO, FX and Netflix. Follow the link here to see the network rankings for 2016 Emmy nominations.
Despite this recognition, Netflix saw a disappointing 2Q earnings on July 18. Missing its forecasted 2.5mln subscribers by 33%, Netflix stock plummeted more than 14%. A strategy prioritizing original content may be successful in terms of recognition by award bodies, but the service’s subscription base is missing estimates. New members drive growth; growth drives original content. However, CEO Reed Hastings remains positive for Netflix’s future, urging investors sit tight through the volatility. “The big picture is very much in tact, and we’re very excited about it,” Hastings said.
