Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan – BBC America
When Dominic Monaghan’s famous character Charlie from ABC’s “Lost” sacrificed himself to a watery grave to save his friends, we knew this talented actor would
be back on the airwaves soon enough. Now did we expect him to turn up as the host of an addictive show in which he travels the world looking for exotic creatures such as a giant Venezuelan centipede that eats bats? Uh, no. No we didn’t. But we couldn’t be happier that’s where this jolly wildlife enthusiast turned up because his absolute passion for bizarre creatures is so infectious, so giddy, so childlike in its raw enthusiasm… that it’s like hiking through the woods with your best friend from grade school—the one who liked to dig up scary bugs and reptiles. You loved it. But you were just a little bit scared. Sorry Charlie, but we’re hooked.
Honorable Mentions
Alaska: The Last Frontier – Discovery Studios/Discovery Channel – This show about an Alaskan family that lives completely off the land teaches to either appreciate our modern conveniences or mourn them. Kind of depends on the episode.
Call of the Wildman – Animal Planet – If you’re not entertained by the hilarious and often life-threatening exploits of “Turtleman” Ernie Brown Jr., there’s really just something wrong with you.
Mountain Men – History – Apparently, we really like this whole living-off-the-land-in-Alaska thing. Can someone please check the whereabouts of the CableFAX staff?
Swamp People – History – They’re sweaty. They’re dirty. And they’re Cajun through and through, navigating the Louisiana swamps as if it was the back of their hand.
