Rhonda Crichlow

When Charter hired its first-ever chief diversity officer in 2016, it turned to Crichlow, who had developed a proven track record at Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Her 10-year tenure at Novartis included playing a key role in the company becoming the first ever to earn the top spot on DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity two years in a row (2014-2015). She’s on a mission to get Charter on a similar trajectory for diversity and inclusion. “I truly believe that diversity and inclusion make us a better company,” she says. “And day-by-day, my team, along with leadership, internal and external partners, and all of Charter’s talented and inspiring employees, are making this a reality.”

What’s a recent example of a step forward for diversity in the industry?
As the 2017 WICT/PAR and NAMIC/AIM surveys demonstrate, we are making significant progress in our efforts to diversify the industry relative to talent. That said, there are many opportunities for us to continue enhancing diversity and inclusion across our industry.

In what areas should the industry step up its efforts with regard to diversity and inclusion?
It’s estimated that 35 percent of the U.S. population will consist of ethnic minorities by 2020. By 2043, the U.S. is predicted to be a plurality nation with no single majority group, but rather a collective majority that consists of all the groups that are today regarded as minority populations. This means individuals and organizations alike will need enhanced levels of cross-cultural competence to remain relevant and competitive.

For companies within our industry to produce sustainable and long-term results, they must leverage employees’ diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to generate new ideas and opportunities that address customers’ evolving needs.

If there were a reality show based on your office, what would it be called?
“The Difference is D&I!” I truly believe that diversity and inclusion make us a better company. And day-by-day, my team, along with leadership, internal and external partners, and all of Charter’s talented and inspiring employees, are making this a reality.
