“Companies must be more flexible. Women are looking for a balance between work and their personal life. By instituting policies promoting flexible work schedules and fostering a culture prioritizing work-life balance, companies can offer women the chance to spend quality time with their families. This, in turn, will lead to increased employee retention and encourage women to rejoin the workforce.”
What biases do you believe have an impact on women’s advancement in the workplace? Women who display assertiveness in a professional setting often face negative labels and may struggle to maintain a positive reputation. Conversely, when a man is assertive, he is commonly recognized for his confidence. Even when a man and a woman perform identical roles, the man tends to receive higher compensation. There are still stigmas around women, like if a woman is having a bad day, “she is emotional,” but no judgments are made if a man is under the weather.
How do you know when it is time to take a risk at your job or in your career? Knowing when it’s time to take a risk in your job or career often involves a delicate balance of factors. In my experience as a journalist, I encounter and assess risks daily. For instance, sending journalists to a war zone is a significant decision, raising ethical questions about whether it’s in the viewers’ best interest. This is a responsibility I must grapple with, and it’s emblematic of the ethical dilemmas that journalists frequently face. Risk-taking is inherent to the daily life of a journalist. To effectively report and convey information, there’s a need to venture into uncertain and potentially dangerous situations. In this profession, being risk-aware and knowing when to take calculated risks is essential. It’s about finding a balance between the potential benefits of a story and the safety and ethical considerations that come with it.
What is something you learned by mentoring someone? Something valuable I’ve learned through mentoring someone is realizing that I don’t have all the answers and that learning is an ongoing journey. In my role as a mentor, I’ve had the privilege of working with younger staff, and one of the most striking revelations has been how much I’ve learned from them, particularly in the realm of technology. The ever-evolving landscape of technology can be quite complex, and my younger colleagues bring fresh insights, innovative approaches, and a deep understanding of the latest technological advancements. This has been a humbling experience for me, as it constantly reminds me of the vast knowledge I have yet to acquire.
