Among Kim’s many duties was launching Turner’s first direct-to-consumer streaming service, FilmStruck, and helping to develop Backlot, TCM’s first official fan club. “It’s obvious there is work to be done for more diversity behind the camera,” she says. “However, I do believe we have made progress on diversity in front of the camera, though there is still much work to be done on both fronts.”

A February 2018 UCLA study revealed that of the 45 new scripted shows approved for 2017-18 across broadcast, cable and digital platforms, only four were from creators of color, all of whom were black. What is your reaction to this report?
While disappointing on multiple levels to have so few creators of color, especially on a personal level to see that none are Asian American, it’s a reminder to all of us to make diversity and inclusion a cornerstone priority in each of our organizations.

What’s a recent example of a step forward for diversity in the industry?
In light of the study that was mentioned above, it’s obvious there is work to be done for more diversity behind the camera. However, I do believe we have made progress on diversity in front of the camera, though there is still much work to be done on both fronts. Recently, I have been encouraged that the drumbeat for more Asian American representation in Hollywood is growing louder. From Sandra Oh making Emmy history as the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for best lead actress in a drama series, to the success of “Crazy Rich Asians”—the first all Asian cast in 25 years from a major studio—it is clear that representation on the big screen is growing and the industry is realizing its importance.

In what areas should the industry step up its efforts with regard to diversity and inclusion?
I am hopeful that this movement towards more diversity and inclusion on the big screen continues and isn’t just a moment in history. One of the reasons I love working in media is the influence that our industry has. Changing Hollywood is a conduit for exposure and has great influence on our broader society being more inclusive. It’s powerful to see a face like yours represented on the big screen and television.
