“Many of those I have mentored have branched out to different parts of the industry. Those relationships have changed over time, providing an important knowledge and relationship network.”

What is something you learned by mentoring someone? One of the things that I was most surprised by when I started mentoring is how much you gain when sharing your experience and expertise with others. Often those earlier in their career or at other levels in your organization have a very different perspective on the industry. I found that while mentoring others I often gained new insight on myself and my own career journey. Many of those I have mentored over the years have branched out to different parts of the industry. Those relationships have changed and grown over time providing an important knowledge and relationship network.

How do you know when it is time to take a risk at your job or in your career? I think it’s time to take a risk if you aren’t feeling curious anymore. I work in research and experience has taught me that if you think you have answered all the questions there are, then it’s time to start asking new ones. It is also difficult to advance in your career without taking risks because taking risks is what fuels growth. Often that is accomplished by moving to a new company but it can be done within your own company as well. That often means challenging the status quo or taking on a new project or part of the business.
